- La Plataforma por las Empresas Responsables, en la que REDES participa, junto a más de 200 organizaciones de la sociedad civil y ciudadanos individuales, firman una carta abierta pidiendo una mayor responsabilidad climática corporativa en las cadenas globales de valor.
- Esta muestra de apoyo se produce solo unas semanas antes de una votación crucial del borrador de legislación europea sobre debida diligencia.
Un nuevo sondeo ha revelado un fuerte apoyo público a una ley europea de debida diligencia empresarial que, de aprobarse, obligaría a las empresas que operan en la UE a tomar medidas para reducir sus emisiones.
La Directiva de Debida Diligencia de las Empresas en materia de Sostenibilidad, actualmente en trámite en el Parlamento de la UE, podría exigir a las empresas que operan en la UE que tomen medidas para identificar y prevenir las violaciones de los derechos humanos y los daños medioambientales, como la deforestación y la contaminación a lo largo de toda su cadena de valor. La campaña “Justice is everybody’s business” encargó la realización de una encuesta en 10 países de la UE, incluida España, que reveló que:
– Casi 9 de cada 10 españoles encuestados (86%) apoyan una ley europea que obligue a todas las empresas a reducir sus emisiones de efecto invernadero para que el calentamiento global no pase de 1.5 ºC.
– 7 de cada 10 españoles encuestados (70%) cree que el sector bancario también debería responsabilizarse de las acciones de las empresas en las que invierten o a las que prestan dinero.
Desde la presentación del proyecto de ley al Parlamento, las instituciones financieras han gastado al menos 100 millones de euros en presionar a la Unión Europea. Países como España o Francia han apoyado excluir al sector financiero de las nuevas reglas de debida diligencia propuestas por la UE.
Junto con la encuesta, más de 200 figuras destacadas y organizaciones de la sociedad civil han firmado una declaración en la que exigen “una legislación europea fuerte, adecuada para afrontar la crisis climática y hacer realidad la justicia climática para los afectados.” La petición llega antes de una votación crítica del proyecto legislativo en la Comisión de Asuntos Jurídicos del Parlamento Europeo.
“La opinión en toda la UE es clara. Se necesitan reglas más estrictas para garantizar que las empresas y los bancos rindan cuentas adecuadamente en toda su cadena de valor global y no continúen operando a expensas de la gente y del planeta. El proyecto de ley en su forma actual es demasiado débil para ser efectivo en la práctica, por lo que debe fortalecerse aún más para garantizar que las empresas estén obligadas a desarrollar e implementar planes de transición para reducir sus emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero. La aprobación de esta ley histórica significaría que empresas contaminantes como extractivas y/o energéticas ya no puedan eludir la responsabilidad por los daños que causen en Europa y en el extranjero”.

Nota técnica de la encuesta: La encuesta se ha llevado a cabo por la empresa YouGov Plc mediante un cuestionario online administrado aleatoriamente a un panel de más de 800.000 personas de distintos países europeos, seleccionando posteriormente la muestra de acuerdo con las características de cada país. En el caso español el tamaño total de la muestra fue de 1.072 adultos (nivel de confianza 95%, con un error muestral de +/-3%). Las cifras se han ponderado y son representativas de todos los adultos de España (mayores de 18 años). El trabajo de campo se llevó a cabo telemáticamente entre el 7 y el 9 de febrero de 2023.
